Sometimes when everything else seems to fail, there is only one solution and that is to start from scratch. That does not mean, forget all the messes of the past. Instead it is best to remember the good parts and learn from the bad and swiftly move on!

In the past when I studied web site promotion-internet marketing with the aim for an internet business start up, I was an eager beaver, launching myself into everything, reading alot and doing little. I got stuck in information paralysis and got so tired trying to analyze everything that I got exhausted and got distracted by the next best thing.

I was like a busy bee trapped inside a window  beating my wings against the cold hard glass and finally someone has opened the window and set me free to breath nice fresh life giving air! I feel restored and with the rush of oxygen to my brain I am begininng to think and function again.

I am starting from scratch learning internet marketing the right way. Instead of being paralyzed by inaction I am inspired to act. I do little but sometimes its the little steps that end up doing alot!

A little bit of me can be found in a quick video I shot-I don’t think Hollywood will be breaking down my door but who knows maybe someone will think my Irish accent is cute!

When I get my courage back, I hope to post more videos explaining key areas of learning which I found useful. To your success and mine-Orla

 Out there in the wide world of Google, there is a man who is spoken about with reverence, who is followed and worshiped by thousands who works miracles with even the most unlikely of people. He is responsible for launching  many successful internet business start ups and who I am proud to call my online internet marketing mentor, a drumroll please for  Mr Alex Jeffreys.

Don’t worry, this article isn’t going to be one of those starry eyed ones but I do believe giving credit where credit is due.

I titled this piece of writing “spending the night shift with Alex Jeffreys”. Let’s face it, it is a lot less controversial than “spending the night with Alex Jeffreys” but that is exactly what I do.

Now before you gasp, let me explain.

You see, I spend very tiring long days with 2 wild and wired kids who only shut down when I remove their batteries about 930 at night! I then spend a bit of quality time with my husband even if it’s just to show him I exist! He works just as hard and spends long hours at work just as I do.

I go to bed for a while and then get up to do the night shift with Alex Jeffreys!

So far my live training begins at 11pm with Alex every Monday night and believe me it is intense. I normally call it a night around 2pm but the party is still in full swing when I sign off. I work other nights also but I do take 2 nights off in the week which I feel is important.

I do limit my time spend at work during the night as I find it hard to unwind again afterwards as my mind is buzzing with activities to be done, implementing what I have learned etc.

I thought ignorance was bliss but the realisation of how little I really know is depressing. I know this is all part of the “process” of going from unconscious incompetence (where you basically don’t have a clue but are ignorant of this fact) to conscious incompetence (when you realise that yes you know very little) and then from conscious competence (hey I’m getting the hang of this) to unconscious competence (automatically know what to do and do it well).

What a mouthful, but these are the stages of the learning process and I am at the conscious incompetence stage moving slowly towards the conscious competent stage. Progress at last!

Sitting here on the bed after a lovely evening with family and friends something came into my mind. It was about “work smarter not harder“.

It is so simple yet so profound.

I used to see so many people at work putting in the hours but putting in the hours and productivity are 2 quite different things.  As I had had a young child under 2 at the time and had to leave work every day at a certain time, I had to stay focussed and get  everything done correctly and on time.

Was I under pressure-you bet!

The company got the same amount of work out of me as if I worked full time (go figure)!

This led me to think of the old childrens tale of the tortoise and the hare. It is so beautifully summarised here that I would do the author a disservice to even try to summarise. I encourage you to have a read for yourself and let me know what you think!

Having 2 young kids, trying to get the work-life  balance right is always a struggle. I used to work hard when I had no kids but now that I have two and am home with them, I find that my days are longer but totally worth it. I know that working around them during the day is a disaster. Let me share two incidents with you.

1. I was speaking to somene on skype and I had a camera attached to my pc but  the other person didn’t. I didnt realise my son had sneaked into the room, climbed up on the bed behind my pc and was doing lots of “interesting” things while on camera. I was oblivious as I was concentrating on what I was saying to the other person on skype whom I’m sure was getting a class act from my young  fellow who relished his 2 minutes of fame on camera!

2. My even younger daughter had climbed on my lap when I was on the phone to someone and was jumping up and down till I realised I could smell something quite off. She  had doggie poo all over her shoes and was now all over my clothes. I thought my phone call would never end!

Belive me I have other incidents but who has all day!

Anyway since then I only work by night when they sleep. I found some great music on youtube which really does the trick in getting them wound down and putting them to sleep fast so I can work. Its by a freelance guy called Paul. Type in “paul from stoke”on youtube. His  music is amazing. I have it on in the background and it is really inspirational, uplifiting,  totally unique and my kids love it too. Great for winding down or just gentle unobtrusive background music. He also has a web www.paulfromstokeuk.com . Anything for a peaceful night I’d say!

Have a look at the following.If this isn’t a recipe for the perfect way to life, I don’t know what is.   In my opinion, this goes higher than any religious beliefs. However  that is just my opinion. What do you think?

Most of the ebooks, internet courses, webinars and other products I purchased  are either gathering dust on my shelf or just sitting on my hard drive taking up space.

Each time I purchased something new my heart was temporarily lifted and I thought that this would finally be the thing that would show me how to work successfullyonline. Only to have my hopes and expectations dashed yet again.

I was motivated so that wasn’t why I was failing, I wasn’t stupid but I just didn’t seem to get it. Its as if there was a piece of information in each item I purchased that was missing, i.e the glue that holds everything together.

Having found a successful person working on the internet to show me exactly what the missing ingredient was that was holding me back, I am now firmly back on track. What I was missing was the “know-how

“Its not building an online business-its KNOWING how to run one MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

This is what was evading me for so long.

Imagine your time online as a book with 100 pages of failure. Only YOU can rewrite the last chapter into a success story.

To create your own success story go to http://www.smartincomegenerator.com for a FREE WEBINAR.

To run an effective online business, the first thing to understand is that you don’t need to know the basics of internet marketing but you do need to know the basics of business.  This really is the most important internet marketing tip you need to know. Marketing is just one aspect of a business, all be it a very important aspect. Trying to run a business with no business knowledge is a recipe for disaster.

For effective business management,

  1. It should be structured to run according to a schedule of planned events or activities;
  2. It should meet its deadlines
  3. It should be as close as possible to operating on autopilot when fully up and running.

Knowing your strengths and how you can apply them to a business is very important, however it is even more important to spend time really looking at areas of weakness as these areas will slow you down and may even prove detrimental to your business. Know when to get help and go do it!
Effective business management  requires planning with 3 focus areas-these are:-

  • Your business plan;
  • Your entrepreneur plan; and
  • Your personal plan.

Don’t dilute your chance of success by focussing on too many goals. If you have one business goal you have a 95% chance of succeeding, if you have two, the likelihood of success drops to around 70%.

To be successful requires organization. This requires keeping an eye firmly on the long term, intermediate and short term objectives and goals. Make out

  • A 1-year plan;
  • Quarterly plans;
  • Monthly plans;
  • Weekly plans; and
  • Daily plans.

Again apply this for business, entrepreneurial and personal objectives. Plan from the end and work back.

  1. Always plan for tomorrow today.
  2. Any items not finished at the end of a day become the priority and first items to be done the next day.
  3. Daily tasks should be entered into a “to do list” and prioritised according to a, b or c wih a being the most critical.
  4. At the end of the day a “did” sheet should be filled out. This should be checked against the “to do” list to ensure you stay focussed and remain on track to meet your targets.
  5. Allocate timeframes to complete each daily task and use a countdown timer to get productive tasks done.
  6. Work in blocks to get more productivity going.
  7. Do not go over the time allocation so that you become faster and more focussed on getting things done.
  8. Allocate certain times of the day where you are non contactable except for emergencies and use this time to do the most complicated tasks or tasks which will bring you more revenue.
  9. Allocate certain times of the day for correspondence such as emails etc and stick to this. Otherwise you will find gaps to fall through and get sidetracked reading superfluous emails etc.

The bubble finally burst for me on the 3rd April 2010. After everything I had purchased hoping to get successfully started online hoping to make a success of myself, I now realised it was all a shambles…and the despair set in. You see, I always wanted to start up an internet business and now it looked like this was never going to happen.

I don’t remember how I stumbled on Alex Jeffreys (please google him if you haven’t heard of him) but after reading his gurus nightmare report, I was both devastated and utterly blown away at the same time.

I was left with 3 choices:-

  • Ignore what I had just discovered and continue to do the same old thing that clearly was getting me no-where;
  •  Totally walk away from any hope of working online and change direction totally; or
  •  Somehow find a way to work with this guy and finally get somewhere.

Alex opened a competition for spots on his coaching program, the last for a number of years as he was concentrating on other business ventures.

I googled what his last students wrote about him and I was both convinced and committed to making things happen after hitting my head against a brick wall for so long.

Althought I didn’t win 1 of the 5 spots (there were over 750 entries), I thought I would share my entry with you just so you may get to know me a bit better. We had to start the entry to the competition with “Yes, Alex I want you to be my personal mentor because…”

So here it goes!

“Yes, Alex I want you to be my personal mentor because like you, I am also passion not ego driven. I really want the chance to change lives for the better and get a huge buzz about the potential of doing it on a global scale while looking after my young kids at home, especially my young son who has special needs and needs me more than ever.

 I am 100% committed to you and ready to launch from prospect to marketer . I am like a sponge ready to soak up everything you will teach me and then hit the ground running implementing your proven marketing plan. Teach me please-I am teachable!

I am sick of looking for pieces of the jigsaw that appear to be missing or don’t fit together well and can’t seem to figure out what the jigsaw is supposed to be. Its all so unclear.

At the moment, I feel like I am throwing darts in the dark-and God knows that can hurt and be costly to fix! I’d love to have my personality translate online as I am a transparent honest type of person and believe in giving my best and working for the best and sharing any good ideas I have with likeminded people so that everyone will ultimately benefit.

I lost a lot of money on what turned out to be an internet scam and walked away-I just hadn’t the stomach to promote this business trying to recoup my costs! I am still upset by what happened to me but know with your help I can turn my financial future around and have a legitimate prosperous business to give income to me and my family and share the financial burden with my husband.

I can’t turn back the clock but I can and will do everything within my capability to make the very most of your coaching program if I am successfully chosen. With your inspiration, clear focus, no BS style and proven track record, I will have all the ingredients for setting up and running a successful online business.

I will be willingly open to be moulded and guided by you. To your ongoing success and in great anticipation of mine also, your aspiring business mentee-Orla”

As this is my first of many blog entries, I felt it would show everyone how I got started and was progressing through the coaching program. Stay tuned for further updates!
